Today marks Day 29 of our Lent series "From Promise to Resurrection," where we explore the profound moments leading up to the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Our focus today is on John 17, often referred to as the High Priestly Prayer. This chapter presents a solemn and intimate moment where Jesus prays for Himself, His disciples, and all believers, emphasizing unity and divine purpose.

John 17 is unique as it offers a glimpse into the personal and intercessory prayer of Jesus on behalf of His followers. This prayer occurs right before His arrest, making it even more poignant as He prepares for His crucifixion. It is a prayer that stretches beyond the confines of time, reaching out to all who would believe in Him.

Jesus Prays for Himself

Glory and Completion: Jesus begins by asking the Father to glorify Him so that He might glorify the Father, acknowledging the completion of the work given to Him (John 17:1-5). Status: Fulfilled.

Jesus Prays for His Disciples

Protection and Sanctification: He prays for His disciples' protection from the evil one and their sanctification in the truth (John 17:6-19). Status: Ongoing.

Jesus Prays for All Believers

Unity and Love: The prayer extends to all future believers, praying for their unity, that they may be one as He and the Father are one (John 17:20-23). He also prays for the love with which the Father has loved Him to be in them (John 17:26). Status: Ongoing.
