Day 25: The Resurrection and the Life — John 11
Welcome to Day 25 of our Lent series "From Promise to Resurrection." Today, we reflect on a profound declaration found in John 11, where Jesus proclaims Himself as "the resurrection and the life." This chapter not only deepens our understanding of Christ's identity but also challenges us to consider the implications of His words in our lives.
In John 11, we encounter the story of Lazarus, a friend of Jesus who falls ill and dies. When Jesus arrives at his tomb, He offers comfort to Lazarus’ sisters, Martha and Mary, with a powerful statement: "I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; and whoever lives by believing in me will never die. Do you believe this?" (John 11:25-26). This moment is pivotal, highlighting Jesus' authority over life and death and His role in God's redemptive plan.
The context of Jesus’ declaration is crucial. Lazarus' death provided the backdrop for one of Jesus' most dramatic signs—raising Lazarus from the dead. This miracle served multiple purposes: it confirmed Jesus' divine authority, foreshadowed His own resurrection, and strengthened the faith of His followers. By calling Himself the resurrection and the life, Jesus was not merely speaking about physical resurrection but was also inviting His listeners to find eternal life through faith in Him.
This passage challenges us to reflect on the nature of belief. Jesus poses a direct question to Martha, and to all of us: "Do you believe this?" It’s a question that requires us to consider not just our intellectual assent but also our trust and reliance on Jesus for our eternal destiny. Belief, in this context, is not passive; it’s an active, life-shaping confidence in Jesus as Lord over death and giver of life.
Furthermore, the story of Lazarus underscores the compassion of Jesus. He is deeply moved by the mourning of Lazarus’ family and weeps alongside them, showing His genuine empathy for human suffering. This emotional response from Jesus demonstrates that our pain and grief are not overlooked by God. Rather, they are met with His compassion and power to bring life out of death.
As we continue our journey from promise to resurrection during this Lent season, let us ponder the depth of Jesus' claim as the resurrection and the life. In doing so, we are invited to renew our faith in Him who holds the keys to life and death. This passage not only assures us of Christ’s power over the grave but also offers us a profound hope that transcends our earthly struggles and leads us into eternal life with Him.
Today, let us hold tightly to the promise embedded in Jesus’ words in John 11. As we reflect on His power to bring life from death, may our hearts be filled with renewed faith and hope in the resurrection power of Christ, which assures us of our future resurrection and eternal life in His presence.
